The founding member, and lead designer Chris White didn’t have a straightforward path into the industry of website development, social media management, marketing and design. Some might say he fell into it, others might say it was fate.
Growing up in Swansea, South Wales, after leaving school he didn’t really have any clue as to what he wanted to do “when he grew up”. As a result he floated around jobs that included; Bar Manager, Assistant Manager in a Nationwide Bookmakers and even worked in an Egg Farm.
(Before he discovered he was a vegetarian).
During these jobs Chris discovered he enjoyed one element of the job over others, namely marketing and the creative opportunities marketing presented.
While working at the Bookmakers he decided to attend college to learn website design and film making/editing on a part time basis. Rather ironically, Chris enjoyed the writing element to the course over that of the website design.
After leaving school Chris had worked for a decade, but now decided he would like a change of direction and scenery. He applied to Staffordshire University to take a degree in Screenwriting with film studies, and took a special interest in marketing of a motion picture
During this course, Chris had to write scripts for Tv, Film and radio and would often have to produce these scripts into actual productions. One of his productions can be seen here. Romeo and Juilette and thier forbiden love retold using Pepsi and Coca Cola….. obviously.
Once finishing his degree with a 2:1, Chris decided that although he had the opportunity to move to London and Germany to continue his passion of writing, that the call of the Welsh hills, the countryside, his friends and his family was too good to pass up.
On moving back to Swansea, the opportunities for scripts writers and editors were hard to come by, but bills had to be paid. Chris decided that the best course of action was to work and write in his spare time. He was welcomed back by a previous employer to take over the role of day manager in his local pub.
During his time there, through connections he had developed he was offered a job with a growing dental business known as The Parkway Clinic. The opportunity, although a step up from his current job, was mainly just admin and dealing with company accounts.
While in the job the directors of Parkway discovered Chris’ varied history and experience and asked whether he would be able to take a look at their business model. They mainly outsourced their online/offline marketing, and wanted to see whether it was possible to handle this “in house”.
Although it had been several years since Chris had done any website work, and the industry had changed so much since “his day” he accepted the opportunity and began working for the Parkway on a full time basis as a Marketing manager.
He spent time familiarising himself with content systems such as WordPress, taught himself basic coding and learned about the backend of website construction and management.
The Parkway wanted to evolve their reputation in the dental industry. Historically, they had been mostly known as a Private Hospital that completed NHS contracts. They wanted a rebrand and tried to get into the private dentistry market.
Over the following couple of years, Chris built up a social media following for the business. Helped redesign and remodel the businesses website and overall change the reputation of the business.
To this day the Parkway continues to grow in the world of private dentistry, and has won several awards, most notably in the private dental awards. Where the Parkway won, Best Website 2022.
After years of service, Chris decided he would like to take what he had learned and try to build a brand and a business of his own. The Parkway, accepted his proposal, and agreed that they wanted him to continue his work on a freelance basis.
Since then, Chris has continued to grow Geekabite, and is now looking to expand it going forward. He has mainly been involved with medical businesses, but is now looking to take his experience and apply it to smaller businesses in the Neath, Port Talbot areas.
His philosophy is, “why should only the big businesses get big exposure? Nice guys shouldn’t always finish last, and together we can grow your business”.
